Traveling? How to Keep Your Credit Cards Secure

You’ve got your trip planned. Don’t let something that’s unplanned wreck your getaway.

USA Today provides five tips to keep your credit cards secure while you’re traveling. CreditCards.com also suggests you become aware of alternatives to paying with your credit card, including prepaid cards, finding access to wire transfers and cash advances.

Tip 1

Take only one or two credit cards to use on a trip. It’s easier to keep track of one card than several. CreditCards.com also adds the recommendation to always travel with at least one additional method of payment, and keep that card separate in case your wallet or purse gets stolen.

Tip 2

Keep your credit card in your sight at all times. Do not let a clerk or waiter walk off with your card.

Tip 3

Check with your credit card company before you travel to find out how to report a lost or stolen card. If you are traveling far away, the toll-free numbers will not always work. According to Experian, most credit card issuers — including RBFCU — no longer require notifications before you go on a trip; however, some card companies still ask you to notify them when you’re traveling internationally.

RBFCU empowers you by making it easy to set up customized card usage Alerts in Online Banking or the RBFCU Mobile app for your RBFCU credit and debit cards. You choose your Alerts and stay connected to your accounts even when you’re miles away. RBFCU’s Manage Cards feature in Online Banking or on the mobile app allows you to freeze or report a lost or stolen card, and that can help you avoid an unnecessary phone call while you’re on vacation.

CreditCards.com recommends that you keep aware of the benefits that comes with your card: 24-hour hotline, ability to overnight a new card, etc.

Tip 4

Place your credit card in a secure wallet or money belt inside of your jacket or shirt. Placing a wallet containing your cards and money in your back pocket makes you an easy target for pickpockets.

Tip 5

Keep your credit cards in a safe provided by the hotel or cruise ship. This is the safest option when you are not using them. Look for a safe, usually located in the closet of your guest room.
